Des Moines, IA – A colder stretch of fall weather is heading toward Iowa this weekend, with temperatures expected to fall into the 30s across much of the state Saturday morning, raising the possibility of frost in areas that have avoided colder conditions so far this season.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, most of Iowa is forecast to experience overnight temperatures in the 30s heading into Saturday, Oct. 17, with frost potentially developing where temperatures fall to around 37 degrees or lower.
The incoming cold could mark a noticeable seasonal change for residents across central, northern and southern Iowa.
Forecasters noted that many locations across Iowa typically experience their first fall temperatures below 37 degrees earlier in the season.
Historical temperature data shared by the National Weather Service shows that the median timing of the first fall reading below 37 degrees generally occurs during late September or early October across much of the state.
That makes this weekend's expected cold particularly notable for areas that have remained relatively mild into mid October.
While temperatures do not necessarily need to reach freezing for frost to form, clear skies, light winds and favorable surface conditions can allow frost to develop even when official air temperatures remain several degrees above 32.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants, gardens and late season vegetation should monitor local forecasts and consider protective measures before Saturday morning.
Drivers traveling early Saturday should also prepare for a chilly start, especially in rural and low lying locations where temperatures can fall more quickly overnight.
The National Weather Service has not indicated in the supplied update that a statewide frost advisory or freeze warning is in effect.
Residents are encouraged to follow updated forecasts as the weekend approaches, since exact temperatures and frost coverage will depend on local conditions.
