Des Moines, IA – A developing severe weather threat could bring damaging winds and a few tornadoes to southwestern and southern Iowa Monday evening, Nov. 2, as thunderstorms intensify ahead of an approaching cold front.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, scattered showers and non severe thunderstorms will be common across much of Iowa throughout Monday before a more concerning round of storms develops later in the day.
Tornado and Damaging Wind Threat After 5 PM Forecasters have identified the period after 5 p.m. Monday as the primary window for isolated severe thunderstorms across southwestern and southern Iowa.
The National Weather Service has assigned the affected area a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk, indicating that isolated severe storms are possible.
Damaging winds and a few tornadoes are the primary hazards identified in the latest forecast.
The risk area includes portions of southwestern and south central Iowa, including communities near Council Bluffs, Atlantic, Red Oak, Creston and Lamoni.
Des Moines lies near the northern edge of the highlighted risk area, while much of central and northern Iowa remains outside the designated severe weather zone.
Storms Expected Throughout Monday Showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across Iowa from morning into the afternoon, although most early activity is forecast to remain below severe limits.
A passing cold front will provide additional opportunities for thunderstorm development during the evening.
While widespread severe weather is not currently anticipated, isolated stronger storms could develop quickly.
Residents Urged to Prepare The National Weather Service is encouraging residents to remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
Those living in the highlighted risk area should identify a safe indoor shelter before storms arrive.
If a tornado warning is issued, move to a basement or small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.
Residents should continue monitoring updated forecasts throughout Monday as storm timing and potential hazards become clearer.
