Davenport, IA – A cold November air mass is settling across eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois Friday, Nov. 6, bringing chilly afternoon temperatures before a widespread frost and freeze threat develops overnight, with lows potentially dropping into the upper 20s.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, high pressure building into the Midwest will keep temperatures below seasonal averages Friday, with most communities struggling to climb beyond the middle 40s to around 50 degrees.
Freezing temperatures are expected across much of the region tonight.
Forecasters say overnight lows will fall into the upper 20s and lower 30s, creating favorable conditions for widespread frost and freezing temperatures.
Communities across eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois, including Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, Muscatine, Clinton and surrounding areas, should prepare for a significantly colder night.
The coldest temperatures are expected late Friday night into early Saturday morning.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should take precautions before temperatures fall below freezing.
Frost and freezing conditions can damage tender vegetation, particularly in gardens and areas where the growing season has not completely ended.
A major temperature rebound arrives by Sunday.
Despite the overnight cold, the weekend forecast brings improving conditions across the region.
Saturday will feature dry weather and afternoon highs in the lower 50s, with southwest winds between 5 and 10 mph.
By Sunday, temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 50s and lower 60s, returning to above normal levels for early November.
Mostly sunny skies and west winds between 5 and 15 mph should accompany the warmer conditions.
The temperature change could exceed 30 degrees between Friday night's coldest readings and Sunday's afternoon highs in some locations.
The National Weather Service expects generally dry conditions throughout the weekend, providing favorable weather for outdoor activities after the chilly start.
