Davenport, Iowa – Widespread storms arrive late tonight, bringing a flash flood risk as repeated downpours could drop up to 3 inches in parts of Iowa.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected late Monday night through Tuesday. Storms could repeatedly cross the same locations, increasing the risk of flash flooding.
The Weather Service places parts of central and northeast Iowa, including areas around Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Waterloo, in a Level 2 of 4 excessive rainfall risk. The Quad Cities and surrounding areas are generally under a Level 1 risk.
Between 1 and 2 inches of rain is likely from central into northeast Iowa by 7 a.m. Tuesday, with localized totals of 3 inches possible.
Heavy rainfall could quickly flood roads, low lying areas, fields and basements. Rapid rises are also possible on streams and creeks. Frequent lightning will accompany some thunderstorms.
Residents near rivers should prepare for possible flooding and monitor water levels. The Weather Service warns drivers and pedestrians never to cross flooded roads. People in flood prone neighborhoods should move valuables out of basements and other poorly drained areas and identify alternate travel routes in case streets become impassable.
The threat is particularly important for anyone traveling late tonight or Tuesday as repeated thunderstorms could cause water to accumulate quickly on roads.
Widespread showers and thunderstorms remain likely through Tuesday. Residents should keep emergency alerts enabled and continue monitoring Weather Service updates as rainfall develops, especially in areas that receive multiple rounds of storms.
