Davenport, Iowa – More than 4 inches of rain could fall in isolated areas of eastern Iowa and western Illinois by Thursday as repeated thunderstorms threaten to flood roads, low lying neighborhoods and fields while pushing rivers and streams higher.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are likely from Monday night through Thursday. Total rainfall above 2 inches is likely, with localized amounts exceeding 4 inches possible where storms repeatedly cross the same locations.
The NWS places the chance of receiving at least 2 inches near 70% across parts of southeastern Iowa and around 60% near Cedar Rapids. The probability is about 40% around the Iowa City to Quad Cities corridor.
Repeated downpours could trigger localized flash flooding, rapidly raise creeks and streams, and send water into basements. Rising river levels are another concern through the week.
Drivers on Interstate 80 and other eastern Iowa and western Illinois roads should never enter flooded pavement. Residents near rivers should monitor water levels and prepare for potential flooding before the heaviest rain develops.
The threat begins Monday night and continues through Thursday, meaning flooding could worsen where multiple storms hit the same communities. Additional flood alerts may follow as rainfall totals increase.
