DAVENPORT, IA – Strong northwest winds are expected to develop across eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois Thursday night, Oct. 15, before increasing Friday, with widespread gusts of 30 to 40 mph and a few gusts potentially reaching 45 mph.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, northwest winds will develop overnight and strengthen during the day Friday, bringing windy conditions across the region.
The forecast includes the Quad Cities area, encompassing Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa, along with Moline and Rock Island, Illinois.
Forecasters expect gusts of 30 to 40 mph across the area Friday, although isolated gusts near 45 mph remain possible.
The stronger winds could make driving more difficult, particularly for motorists operating high profile vehicles such as trucks, trailers and recreational vehicles.
The weather service is urging drivers to exercise caution when traveling during the windy conditions, especially on exposed roadways where crosswinds may be more noticeable.
Residents are also encouraged to secure loose outdoor objects and decorations before winds increase.
Lightweight lawn furniture, seasonal decorations and other unsecured items could be displaced by stronger gusts.
The windy conditions are expected to develop Thursday night and continue increasing during Friday, although the weather service has not specified an exact time when the strongest gusts will occur.
The forecast graphic also does not identify any wind related watches, warnings or advisories.
While gusts near 45 mph are possible, the National Weather Service indicates that most gusts should remain in the 30 to 40 mph range.
Residents planning outdoor activities or travel Friday should account for the stronger northwest winds and monitor updated forecasts for changes.
Eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois residents should prepare for increasing winds Thursday night, with gusts commonly reaching 30 to 40 mph Friday and isolated gusts near 45 mph possible.
