Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Drivers across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware should avoid flooded roads Saturday afternoon and tonight as heavy rain raises the risk of rapid water accumulation in low lying and flood prone areas.
According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center and NWS Mount Holly, flood watches cover portions of the three states from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Excessive runoff could flood rivers, creeks, streams and other locations that routinely collect water.
The threat includes the Philadelphia region and surrounding parts of southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Urban streets, poor drainage locations and roads near smaller waterways could see localized problems if heavier rain repeatedly crosses the same areas.
Motorists should never drive through water covering a roadway. Even where widespread river flooding does not develop, rapidly rising creeks or ponding can make individual roads unsafe. Residents in flood prone locations should monitor alerts overnight and keep phones charged in case warnings are issued.
The Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center said localized impacts are expected, but no flooding is currently projected at its official river prediction points.
That distinction makes smaller waterways and neighborhood level flooding the primary concern through Sunday morning. Additional warnings may be issued if rainfall produces faster runoff than expected.
