Fort Wayne, IN – Freezing temperatures and widespread frost threaten northern Indiana late Saturday, October 17, as overnight lows drop toward 31 degrees. Freeze warnings and frost advisories are in effect through early Sunday morning, raising concerns about damage to sensitive plants and outdoor vegetation before a significant warming trend arrives next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, temperatures are expected to fall near freezing across portions of northern Indiana and northwest Ohio. Areas under freeze warnings face the greatest potential for damaging cold, while locations under frost advisories should experience lows generally between 33 and 36 degrees.
The freeze warning area includes Fort Wayne, Warsaw, Huntington and Angola, along with portions of northwest Ohio near Defiance and Van Wert.
Farther west, frost advisories cover communities including South Bend, Goshen, La Porte, Valparaiso, Rochester and Lafayette.
Plants at Risk Saturday Night
The Weather Service warns that widespread frost could damage tender vegetation, particularly in gardens and agricultural areas.
Residents should bring sensitive potted plants indoors or cover vulnerable outdoor vegetation before temperatures fall late Saturday night.
Saturday afternoon will remain sunny, with highs between 52 and 58 degrees before temperatures rapidly cool overnight.
Warmer Weather Returns Next Week
Sunday morning lows are forecast between 31 and 37 degrees, followed by afternoon highs reaching 59 to 65 degrees.
Monday brings additional warming, with highs between 64 and 69 degrees and morning lows ranging from 32 to 39 degrees.
By Tuesday, afternoon temperatures could reach 68 to 73 degrees, providing a considerable turnaround from Sunday's freezing conditions.
High pressure is expected to maintain mostly sunny skies and dry weather through much of next week.
October 22–26 Extended Weather Outlook
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center favors above normal temperatures across Indiana during October 22–26, supporting the warmer pattern developing next week.
Below normal precipitation is also favored across much of northern Indiana and northwest Ohio, suggesting relatively dry conditions could continue.
While the extended outlook does not guarantee specific daily temperatures, it indicates an increased likelihood of warmer than normal weather following the weekend freeze.
