South Bend, IN – A driver was hospitalized Sunday evening after a vehicle crashed into a concrete bridge structure and caught fire along the South Bend bypass near Ireland Road, prompting an emergency response and temporary westbound lane closures.
According to the South Bend Fire Department , firefighters responded around 6:15 p.m. Sunday to reports of a vehicle fire near the Ireland Road bridge. Crews arrived and quickly extinguished the flames.
An investigation determined that the vehicle had left the roadway before striking a concrete portion of the bridge. The impact was followed by a fire that caused extensive damage to the vehicle.
Authorities said the driver had already exited the vehicle following the crash. A passing semi truck driver stopped and helped the motorist move away from the burning vehicle as flames spread.
The driver was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Fire officials confirmed that nobody else was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The incident also disrupted traffic along the westbound bypass.
According to the fire department, westbound lanes were completely closed for approximately 20 minutes while emergency crews worked at the scene. One lane subsequently reopened, although traffic remained restricted until the damaged vehicle could be towed away.
The department did not provide additional information about what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway or whether any other circumstances contributed to the collision.
Photos shared by the South Bend Fire Department showed extensive damage to the front of the vehicle, with firefighters working near the wreckage beneath the bridge.
The incident highlights the dangers motorists can face following a serious collision, particularly when a damaged vehicle catches fire.
Officials did not report any additional injuries.
