SOUTH BEND, IN — Residents across northern Indiana are preparing for a dramatic change in weather this week as temperatures approach 90 degrees Tuesday, October 13, before a cold front brings several days of widespread rain and much cooler conditions.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, warm and mainly dry weather will continue through Tuesday before a cold front arrives Tuesday night, bringing an extended period of unsettled weather lasting into Friday morning.
Temperatures Could Approach 90 Degrees Tuesday
Monday, October 12, will feature partly cloudy skies with afternoon highs ranging from 81 to 87 degrees across the forecast region.
Tuesday could be even warmer, with temperatures climbing between 82 and 89 degrees.
The unusually warm conditions will provide one final stretch of summerlike weather before a noticeable shift toward cooler fall temperatures.
Widespread Rain Arrives Wednesday
Rain chances will increase Tuesday night as the approaching cold front moves into the region.
By Wednesday, October 14, widespread showers are expected, with precipitation probabilities reaching 60% to 80%.
Afternoon temperatures will fall into the 71 to 78 degree range, marking the beginning of a significant cooldown.
Rain chances remain elevated Thursday, October 15, with another 60% to 80% probability of precipitation.
Highs Thursday are expected to reach only 66 to 72 degrees, substantially cooler than Tuesday's near 90 degree temperatures.
Cooler Weather Takes Hold Friday
Showers could linger into Friday morning, October 16, before conditions begin improving.
Friday's rain chances decrease to 20% to 40%, while afternoon highs are forecast between 57 and 63 degrees.
Some locations could experience a temperature difference of approximately 30 degrees between Tuesday's peak warmth and Friday's afternoon highs.
Residents traveling across northern Indiana should prepare for wet roadways during the midweek period and monitor updated forecasts for changes in rainfall timing.
