South Bend, IN – Northern Indiana residents face a dramatic weather reversal Tuesday, October 13, through Saturday, October 17, as temperatures approaching 90 degrees give way to multiple rounds of thunderstorms, strong winds and overnight lows in the 30s.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, Tuesday will remain warm and dry, with afternoon highs between 80 and 89 degrees. However, conditions will begin changing late Tuesday night as the first round of rain and thunderstorms moves into the region.
Three Rounds of Rain and Storms Expected
The first round of showers and thunderstorms is forecast from late Tuesday night into early Wednesday, October 14. Rain chances range from 40% to 70%, although severe weather is not expected during this initial period.
A second round is expected Thursday afternoon and evening, October 15, when some thunderstorms could become strong.
Forecasters have identified a marginal severe weather risk, Level 1 of 5, with isolated gusty winds and heavy rainfall possible.
Residents across the South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne and surrounding northern Indiana areas should monitor updated forecasts as the storms approach.
Strong Winds and Colder Air Arrive Friday
A third round of precipitation is expected Friday, October 16, as colder air moves across the Great Lakes region.
Lake effect rain showers are possible, particularly in areas influenced by Lake Michigan. Wind gusts could reach 30 to 40 mph, creating potentially difficult conditions for high profile vehicles and drivers on exposed highways.
Friday afternoon temperatures are expected to reach only 56 to 62 degrees, compared with Tuesday's highs in the 80s.
Weekend Brings Temperatures in the 30s
By Saturday, October 17, dry weather is expected to return, with daytime highs between 55 and 60 degrees.
However, overnight lows are forecast to dip into the 30s during the weekend, bringing a noticeably colder start to mornings across northern Indiana.
Residents should secure lightweight outdoor objects before Friday's gusty conditions and prepare for the sharp temperature change.
