Schererville, IN – Residents in Schererville may notice something different about local police uniforms this October as officers trade their traditional look for pink badges and patches in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
According to the Schererville Police Department , officers will wear the specially colored badges and patches throughout October as a public show of support for people affected by breast cancer.
The department said breast cancer impacts individuals, families and loved ones throughout the Northwest Indiana community.
Police described the change as a small gesture intended to raise awareness while supporting those currently fighting the disease, recognizing survivors and remembering those who have died.
“We wear pink in honor of the fight, in support of survivors, and in memory of those we’ve lost,” the department said in its announcement.
An image shared by Schererville police shows a bright pink department badge against a backdrop of red and blue emergency lights.
October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when organizations and communities use the color pink to highlight the disease and encourage greater awareness.
For Schererville officers, the pink badges provide a visible reminder throughout the month as they interact with residents and respond to calls across the Lake County community.
The department’s campaign also connects Schererville with broader Breast Cancer Awareness Month efforts taking place across Northwest Indiana and the country during October.
Officers are expected to continue wearing the pink badges and patches through the end of the month.
