Rensselaer, IN – Police in Jasper County are searching for a 21 year old Illinois man accused of threatening a woman during a carjacking near Interstate 65 before fleeing authorities following a separate vehicle crash.
According to the Rensselaer Police Department , officers responded shortly before 10 a.m. July 30, 2026, to a reported carjacking near the intersection of I 65 and State Road 114.
The victim told investigators she was refueling her vehicle when a man approached, demanded her car keys and credit card, and allegedly implied he was carrying a firearm.
Police said the suspect allegedly threatened to kill the woman if she refused to comply.
The suspect then allegedly stole her vehicle and fled northbound on I 65.
Surveillance Footage Helps Identify Suspect
Investigators reviewed footage from nearby businesses showing the suspect walking around the area for approximately two to three hours before the incident.
Police said the man had been dropped off earlier that morning in a white passenger vehicle at a business west of I 65.
License plate reader information helped investigators locate that vehicle.
After speaking with its driver, authorities identified the suspect as 21 year old Daemon Robinson of Streamwood, Illinois.
Suspect Remains Wanted Following Crash
A Rensselaer detective monitored license plate reader systems and provided vehicle location updates to Indiana State Police.
Authorities said the stolen vehicle was subsequently involved in a crash, but Robinson allegedly fled before officers could apprehend him.
Evidence recovered from the crash further connected Robinson to the investigation, police said.
Prosecutors have received the case, and felony charges of armed robbery, a Level 3 felony, and auto theft, a Level 6 felony, have been filed.
An arrest warrant has been issued.
As of the department's announcement Wednesday, Oct. 14, Robinson was not in custody.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police said additional information will be released following an arrest.
Robinson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
