Rensselaer, IN – A months long search for a suspect accused of threatening a woman and stealing her vehicle near Interstate 65 in Jasper County has ended with an arrest in Chicago, according to an update released Wednesday by the Rensselaer Police Department .
According to police, 21 year old Daemon Robinson of Streamwood, Illinois, was located in Chicago and taken into custody in connection with outstanding warrants stemming from a July 30 carjacking investigation.
Authorities credited the U.S. Marshals Service with locating and arresting Robinson, bringing an end to the search that followed the alleged robbery.
Woman Allegedly Threatened During Carjacking
The original incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. July 30 near Interstate 65 and State Road 114 in Rensselaer, approximately 80 miles southeast of Chicago.
Investigators said a woman was refueling her vehicle when a man approached, demanded her car keys and credit card, and allegedly implied he had a firearm.
Police said the suspect threatened to kill the woman if she refused to comply before taking her vehicle and fleeing northbound on I 65.
License Plate Readers Help Identify Suspect
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage showing the suspect walking around nearby businesses for several hours before the incident.
License plate reader technology helped detectives identify a vehicle that allegedly dropped him off earlier that morning.
Police said the stolen vehicle was later involved in a crash, but the suspect fled before officers could apprehend him.
Evidence recovered from the crash further connected Robinson to the investigation, according to authorities.
Felony Charges Filed
Robinson faces charges of armed robbery, a Level 3 felony, and auto theft, a Level 6 felony.
The Rensselaer Police Department confirmed his arrest in Wednesday's update but did not specify when he would be transferred to Jasper County.
Robinson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
