PORTAGE, IN — A violent disturbance involving a knife and a firearm near Portage High School prompted school officials to activate a security protocol Wednesday afternoon, temporarily restricting access to the building as police investigated.
According to the Portage Police Department , officers responded around 12:12 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, to a business parking lot near the northeast corner of U.S. Highway 6 and Airport Road after receiving multiple reports of a disturbance involving a handgun.
Because the incident occurred near Portage High School, school resource officers were notified, and officials placed the building into SECURE status as a precaution.
Under the security protocol, entry to and exit from the school were restricted, although students continued their normal activities inside.
Police said preliminary information indicated that a man was allegedly battering a woman in the parking lot when several bystanders attempted to intervene.
During the confrontation, the man allegedly brandished a knife toward the bystanders. One bystander then drew a firearm in self defense, according to investigators.
No shots were fired , police confirmed.
Authorities said the man fled in a blue passenger vehicle toward Airport Road. The woman involved reportedly told bystanders she did not want assistance before running to the same vehicle and leaving with the man.
Investigators said they have a possible identity for the woman and are working to locate her to check on her welfare.
Police emphasized that the investigation remains active but said there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to school safety.
The SECURE protocol at Portage High School has since been lifted , allowing normal access to resume.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or disclosed the identities of those involved.
The Portage Police Department continues investigating the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.
