Portage, IN – Students and parents in Portage can expect an increased police presence around schools Tuesday after a rumor about a possible act of violence prompted an investigation Monday evening.
According to the Portage Police Department , officers began receiving reports from concerned parents around 5:05 p.m. Monday about a rumored threat directed toward a Portage middle school. Police interviewed several parents and Portage Township Schools students while working to determine how the information originated.
Investigators said the situation began with a brief verbal altercation between a Fegely Intermediate School student and a Portage High School student who was at Fegely to pick up a relative.
A third person overheard the argument and later made a FaceTime call to a group of Fegely students describing what happened, police said. Other juveniles reportedly heard only part of that conversation and became concerned that a school shooting could occur.
Police interviewed the person who made the call. According to investigators, that individual said no threats toward the school were heard and weapons were never mentioned.
Officers also interviewed the Portage High School student and a parent. Police said the student denied threatening the school, while the parent told investigators there was no access to weapons in the home.
Based on the investigation, police said they do not believe an actual threat was made against any Portage Township school and found no credible threat to school safety.
As a precaution, however, the department said officers will increase patrols around Portage Township Schools within the city throughout Tuesday.
Police thanked students and parents who reported their concerns and said reports involving school safety will continue to be investigated.
