Merrillville, IN – Northbound traffic on Interstate 65 is facing major disruption Wednesday morning after a serious crash near U.S. 30 in Merrillville left multiple vehicles damaged and sent two patients to hospitals.
According to Indiana State Police's Lowell Post, the crash occurred on northbound I 65 north of U.S. 30. Police said two patients were transported for medical treatment, including one who was flown from the scene. Their conditions were not immediately provided.
Photos released by state police show extensive damage at the crash scene. A tractor trailer left the roadway and came to rest along a guardrail beneath the 73rd Avenue overpass, while another heavily damaged vehicle appears near a bridge support. Debris is scattered across portions of the roadway.
State police said early reports indicate the truck driver was not at fault. Authorities had not yet released additional details about what led to the collision or identified those involved.
Initial traffic reports indicated the center and right northbound lanes were blocked, with traffic at or near a standstill. Drivers traveling through Merrillville and the wider Lake County area should expect significant delays while police, firefighters and other emergency personnel remain at the scene.
The crash is near one of northwest Indiana's busiest highway corridors, where I 65 connects the Merrillville area with Interstate 80/94 and communities south of the Chicago metropolitan area.
Motorists should consider alternate routes and allow additional travel time Wednesday. Drivers approaching the scene should reduce speed and watch for emergency crews and changing lane restrictions.
This remains a developing situation, and lane conditions could change as investigators and cleanup crews continue their work.
