Kentland, IN – Emergency responders were called to a structural fire in the early hours of Monday morning, impacting a local business on Seymour Street. Fire crews arrived on the scene before dawn to battle the blaze at A Stitch in Time, an antique shop located at 402 W. Seymour Street.
According to the Kentland Jefferson Township Fire Department , emergency dispatchers received the call at approximately 4:02 a.m. Upon their arrival, firefighters reported flames visible from the front of the commercial structure.
Crews immediately worked to contain the fire and protect adjacent properties from damage. The sole occupant of the building successfully evacuated the structure.
She was treated on site for minor injuries before being transported by ambulance for further medical evaluation. No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The operation involved a significant inter agency response. The Kentland Jefferson Township Fire Department was supported at the scene by the Newton County Sheriff ’s Department, Brook Fire Department, Goodland Fire Department, Morocco Fire Department, and the Sheldon Fire Department.
Newton County Ambulance and Newton County Dispatch also assisted with the emergency response. Fire Chief Matt Wittenborn expressed gratitude to local businesses, including Casey's General Store and McDonald's, for providing refreshments to responders during the early morning hours.
Officials have confirmed that the cause of the fire remains under active investigation. Residents and members of the community are being asked to keep those affected by the incident in their thoughts as the investigation continues.
