Indianapolis, IN – A widespread frost and freeze threat is developing across central Indiana tonight, with temperatures expected to fall to around 30 degrees in some communities by early Sunday. The National Weather Service is warning residents to protect sensitive plants and exposed outdoor plumbing as some areas face their first freezing temperatures of the fall season.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, every county in central Indiana is under either a Freeze Warning or Frost Advisory for late Saturday, October 17, into Sunday morning, October 18.
Freeze Warning Begins at 2 AM Sunday
The Freeze Warning is scheduled from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. Sunday, covering northern and eastern portions of central Indiana.
Communities including Kokomo, Noblesville, Muncie, Winchester, New Castle, Rushville and Greensburg are within the warning area.
Other communities, including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Terre Haute, Bloomington and Bedford, are within the broader frost advisory area shown on the weather service map.
Forecasters expect clear skies and calming winds overnight, allowing temperatures to fall rapidly as heat escapes from the ground.
Temperatures Could Damage Plants and Pipes
The National Weather Service warns that freezing conditions could kill crops and sensitive vegetation while potentially damaging unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Residents should take precautions before temperatures begin falling Saturday evening.
Recommended actions include bringing tender plants indoors, covering vulnerable outdoor vegetation and wrapping, draining or allowing exposed outdoor pipes to drip slowly.
First Freeze of the Fall Season
For portions of northern and eastern central Indiana, this could mark the first occurrence of below freezing temperatures this fall.
The coldest conditions are expected during the overnight and early morning hours, with the greatest freeze concern lasting through 9 a.m. Sunday.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts and confirm the specific advisory or warning affecting their county.
