INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Central Indiana is experiencing another stretch of unusually pleasant fall weather Wednesday, October 21, following a remarkable series of temperature records that included an 88 degree October afternoon in Indianapolis.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, 2026 has continued an active pattern of record breaking warmth across central Indiana, particularly during the summer and early fall.
The agency reported that Indianapolis experienced its warmest September on record, followed by additional daily temperature records during the second week of October.
One of the most notable records occurred October 13, when Indianapolis reached 88 degrees , surpassing the previous daily record of 86 degrees set in 1975.
Just one day earlier, October 12, the city reached 87 degrees, breaking the previous daily record of 86 degrees established in 1879.
The warm conditions also extended into the overnight hours.
On October 13, Indianapolis recorded a daily record high minimum temperature of 66 degrees, exceeding the previous record of 64 degrees from 1879.
October 14 also saw a record high minimum temperature of 66 degrees, tying the mark set in 2021.
September brought several additional warm overnight records, including 75 degree minimum temperatures on September 2 and 3 and a 77 degree minimum on September 4.
Despite the recent record breaking heat, the forecast now points toward comfortable autumn conditions rather than another surge into the upper 80s.
The National Weather Service expects pleasant weather to continue through Monday, October 26, with afternoon temperatures generally reaching the low 70s under abundant sunshine.
For residents across Indianapolis and surrounding central Indiana communities, the forecast offers favorable conditions for outdoor activities, travel and fall events.
Although these temperatures are less extreme than the recent records, the extended stretch of mild weather continues an unusually warm seasonal pattern.
