Indianapolis, IN – A 27 year old man has been arrested following a deadly altercation on Indianapolis' east side, police announced, marking a significant development in a homicide investigation that began one week earlier.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department IMPD , homicide detectives identified the suspect while investigating the October 12 death of a man found injured in a parking lot near East 38th Street and North Mitthoeffer Road.
The investigation began Monday, October 12, shortly before 8 p.m., when IMPD East District officers responded to the 9900 block of East 38th Street following a report of a person down.
Arriving officers discovered an unresponsive adult male suffering from injuries consistent with trauma. Emergency responders transported the victim to an area hospital, where he later died.
Homicide detectives responded to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Investigators determined that a physical altercation between the victim and suspect allegedly caused the fatal injuries. Detectives subsequently identified a 27 year old man believed to have been involved.
On Monday, October 19, officers assigned to IMPD's Violent Crimes Unit and Special Weapons and Tactics team located the suspect and took him into custody.
Following an interview with investigators, the man was arrested on a preliminary charge of involuntary manslaughter.
Police have not released the suspect's name or the victim's identity in the announcement. Additional details about the alleged altercation were not provided.
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will review the investigation and determine what formal criminal charges, if any, will be filed.
Authorities emphasized that an arrest and preliminary charge are accusations, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
