Indianapolis, IN – A school bus carrying students on a field trip flipped onto its side along Interstate 465 in Marion County Tuesday morning, sending eight children and five adults to area hospitals.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department , the collision happened on northbound I 465 near mile marker 45. Emergency crews reported the incident around 10:03 a.m.
Fire officials said seven children suffered slight injuries while one child was seriously injured. Five adults were also transported with injuries described as slight.
The Warren Township school bus was carrying 24 students and three school personnel on a field trip when the crash occurred. Photos released by the fire department showed the bus resting on its side and a heavily damaged pickup truck nearby.
Authorities said two Indiana State Police troopers were aboard the damaged pickup. Indiana State Police is investigating what caused the collision.
Multiple callers reported the crash to MESA 911. While responding, Indianapolis Fire Department commanders upgraded the incident to a mass casualty response because of the potential number of injured people.
The designation allowed additional ambulances and emergency resources to be deployed before crews arrived and determined the full extent of the injuries.
Fire officials said 16 of the 24 students were transported by school bus for medical checkout only. Warren Township school officials also responded to the scene and worked to notify parents.
The fire department did not provide additional information Tuesday about the seriously injured child’s condition.
Drivers traveling through the Indianapolis metro area could encounter emergency activity around the northbound I 465 crash location as investigators continue reviewing what happened.
