Indianapolis, IN – A 9 year old boy is dead and a 5 year old boy was hospitalized after an alleged hit and run Sunday afternoon on Indianapolis’ northwest side, with police announcing an arrest less than three hours after the crash.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department , officers responded shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sunday to the 6700 block of Eagle Pointe Drive North following reports of a child lying in the street.
Officers arrived and found two young boys, ages 5 and 9, who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. Both children were taken to an area hospital, where the 9 year old later died, police said. IMPD did not provide an updated condition for the younger child.
The vehicle allegedly left before officers arrived.
Investigators spoke with neighbors and reviewed available video, eventually obtaining a description of the vehicle and suspect along with the vehicle’s license plate number, according to IMPD.
Police then turned to automated license plate reader technology , or ALPRs, to determine the vehicle’s direction of travel. Information about its last known location was shared with IMPD East District officers and Lawrence police.
Lawrence officers subsequently located the vehicle in the 10300 block of Pendleton Pike and took the driver into custody.
IMPD said crash investigators arrested the man on a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing death. His name was not included in the department’s announcement.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision. The allegations remain accusations unless proven in court.
The investigation remains ongoing.
