Indianapolis, IN – Thanksgiving travelers across Indiana could encounter early season snow showers as a long range outlook raises the possibility of winterlike conditions during the holiday week. Indianapolis, South Bend and Fort Wayne may experience different weather patterns ahead of Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Midwest forecast region could see colder conditions with scattered snow showers or flurries from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026.
The region includes Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Kentucky. The publication mentions possible brief travel slowdowns where snow develops but does not provide city specific snowfall totals, accumulation probabilities or exact timing.
Northern Indiana has an additional consideration: lake effect snow. Communities around South Bend and the Lake Michigan snowbelt can experience localized snowfall when cold air moves over relatively warmer lake waters.
Indianapolis and Fort Wayne may also see November snow, although conditions can differ considerably from those near Lake Michigan. A snow shower affecting South Bend would not necessarily extend across central or southern Indiana.
NOAA's Oct. 15 November outlook favors above normal temperatures across the Great Lakes, with below normal precipitation favored in parts of the region. Those monthly probabilities do not rule out shorter cold spells or individual snowfall events.
For holiday travelers, I 65 between Indianapolis and northwest Indiana, I 69 through central and northeastern Indiana, and the Indiana Toll Road I 80/I 90 are routes to monitor if winter weather develops.
However, no specific highway disruptions have been forecast by the Almanac.
Could Indiana see snow before Thanksgiving 2026? Yes, it is possible, particularly in northern Indiana, but the regional outlook does not establish whether Indianapolis, South Bend or Fort Wayne will receive snow.
Travelers should check updated National Weather Service forecasts closer to Thanksgiving for more reliable snowfall timing, accumulation expectations and road conditions.
