Indianapolis, IN — Drivers traveling across Indiana this fall are being warned to watch for large farm equipment on rural highways and local roads as harvest season brings more tractors, combines and grain hauling vehicles into traffic.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, motorists are increasingly likely to encounter large agricultural equipment on roadways as farmers work to harvest crops throughout the Hoosier State.
In a safety reminder issued Monday, Oct. 12, INDOT emphasized that farm machinery can be exceptionally wide, sometimes occupying most of the roadway and making passing difficult.
The Indiana State Department of Agriculture also warns that combines, tractors, grain carts and other agricultural vehicles are typically classified as slow moving vehicles, often traveling at speeds of 25 mph or less .
These slower speeds can create unexpected hazards for motorists approaching farm equipment, particularly on narrow rural roads where passing opportunities are limited.
Officials encourage drivers to remain patient and avoid attempting to pass until they have a clear view of approaching traffic.
The agriculture department also advises motorists not to pass farm machinery in designated no passing zones or within 100 feet of intersections, railroad crossings, bridges and similar roadway structures.
Drivers should also avoid passing farm equipment on the left when the operator may be preparing to turn.
Officials warn that a tractor moving toward the right side of the roadway may actually be positioning itself to make a wide left turn.
Motorists should increase following distances, eliminate distractions and allow additional travel time when using agricultural routes.
Farmers are expected to continue moving equipment between fields and storage facilities throughout the fall harvest period.
State officials say patience and caution are essential to protecting both agricultural workers and other motorists.
Additional safety information is available through the Indiana State Department of Agriculture's Harvest Season Safety resources.
