Indianapolis, IN – Hundreds of commercial vehicles and drivers were ordered out of service as Indiana State Police conducted nearly 4,800 inspections during a monthlong enforcement period, according to statistics released Friday.
According to Indiana State Police, its Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division completed 4,789 commercial motor vehicle inspections from Aug. 15 through Sept. 15, recording 9,441 total violations.
The enforcement resulted in 683 commercial vehicles and 589 drivers being placed out of service, ISP reported. Troopers also recorded 1,051 speeding violations, 267 overweight violations and 31 oversize violations.
Another 267 violations involved failure to obey a traffic control device. Overall, the division reported 1,632 traffic enforcement actions during the period.
The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is responsible for enforcing state and federal commercial vehicle regulations across Indiana. Its duties include safety inspections, size and weight enforcement, compliance reviews and post crash commercial vehicle inspections.
ISP said the division also participated in a Labor Day trafficking awareness campaign from Aug. 31 through Sept. 5 alongside agencies in neighboring Michigan, Illinois and Ohio.
Additional enforcement included two weigh station bypass details conducted with ISP district personnel and federal agencies. Those operations targeted the Terre Haute weigh station along Interstate 70 near the Illinois state line and the West Harrison station along Interstate 74 near the Ohio state line.
ISP said its commercial enforcement operations are intended to improve safety for motorists traveling throughout Indiana.
