Benton, IN – An officer involved shooting is under investigation Monday after authorities say a high speed pursuit along US 41 crossed from Benton County into Warren County and ended with a deputy shooting the fleeing driver.
According to Indiana State Police, a Benton County deputy attempted to stop a 2009 Infiniti G37 for a traffic violation on US 41 near County Road 400 South shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Police said the driver allegedly refused to stop and fled southbound at a high rate of speed.
The pursuit continued along US 41 before turning west onto State Road 26 and then south onto County Road 600 West. Police said the Infiniti eventually traveled onto County Road 650 North in Warren County, left the east side of the roadway and stopped in a field.
The driver allegedly fled westbound on foot. During the encounter, police said the driver reportedly indicated he was armed with a weapon.
According to state police, the deputy attempted to deploy a Taser, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Authorities said the driver then allegedly disobeyed commands and advanced toward the deputy, who fired his duty handgun and struck the driver.
Officers immediately provided medical aid until emergency crews arrived. The driver was later flown to an Indianapolis area hospital for treatment. State police did not provide the driver's condition in the preliminary release.
Indiana State Police Lafayette Post detectives are investigating at the request of the Benton County sheriff . Once completed, the investigation will be submitted to the Warren County Prosecutor's Office for review.
Authorities stressed that the information released so far is preliminary and could change as the investigation continues.
