Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana is heading into a dramatic October weather shift, with near record warmth pushing temperatures toward 90 degrees Monday and Tuesday before several rounds of rain and thunderstorms usher in much cooler conditions, potentially bringing frost by Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, unusually warm temperatures will dominate the beginning of the week before rain chances increase Tuesday night, October 13, and continue periodically through Friday, October 16.
Monday, October 12, will feature mostly sunny skies and afternoon highs ranging from 84 to 89 degrees across central Indiana.
The warmth intensifies Tuesday, when temperatures are forecast to reach 88 to 91 degrees, potentially approaching daily records in some communities.
However, the weather pattern begins changing Tuesday night as rain chances return late in the evening.
Wednesday brings additional opportunities for showers and thunderstorms, with afternoon temperatures remaining relatively warm at 79 to 84 degrees.
Rain and thunderstorm chances continue Thursday as highs fall into the 74 to 81 degree range. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the 50s.
By Friday, the cooldown becomes more pronounced, with afternoon highs reaching only 61 to 64 degrees across the region.
That represents a potential drop of nearly 30 degrees from Tuesday's warmest temperatures to Friday's coolest afternoon readings, although the exact change will vary by location.
The National Weather Service also indicates frost is likely Saturday night as colder air settles across central Indiana.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should monitor the weekend forecast and prepare for the possibility of temperatures cold enough to damage vegetation.
Drivers should also anticipate periods of wet roads and reduced visibility during showers and thunderstorms from Tuesday night through Friday.
