Hammond, IN – A Walmart employee was shot and killed Monday morning at a store in northwest Indiana, prompting a police investigation and the closure of the business for the remainder of the day. Authorities confirmed that a suspect is in custody and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
According to the Hammond Police Department , officers responded at approximately 9:09 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, to Walmart North after an off duty Hammond police officer working store security reported a shooting and confirmed a suspect had been detained.
Preliminary findings indicate a male suspect was speaking with a female employee when their interaction escalated into a physical altercation.
Investigators said the suspect then allegedly retrieved a firearm and shot the employee multiple times.
The victim, described as a woman in her mid 20s, died from her injuries , police confirmed.
Authorities have not publicly identified the woman or released the suspect's name.
The circumstances leading to the confrontation remain under investigation, and police have not disclosed whether the suspect and victim knew each other outside the workplace.
The Hammond Police Department said the suspect remains in custody following the deadly encounter.
Walmart North will remain closed for the rest of Monday , allowing investigators to continue their work at the scene.
Based on information currently available, detectives believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no continuing danger to shoppers, employees or the surrounding community.
The incident occurred in Hammond, a Lake County community in the Chicago metropolitan area near the Illinois Indiana state line.
In a public statement, Hammond police extended condolences to the victim's family, friends and coworkers following the fatal shooting.
Officials said additional details will be released as the investigation progresses.
