Georgetown, IN – A southern Indiana police officer was arrested Thursday, October 22, following an investigation into allegations that he repeatedly accessed license plate recognition data without a legitimate law enforcement purpose.
According to Indiana State Police in Sellersburg, Georgetown Police Department Officer Justin Craig was taken into custody at his Greenville residence after investigators uncovered numerous allegedly unauthorized searches within the department's Flock camera system.
Investigation Uncovered Repeated Camera Searches
The investigation began September 2, when Indiana State Police Detective Clay Boley met with Georgetown's police chief regarding irregular search activity.
An internal departmental review allegedly revealed that Craig conducted numerous searches throughout 2026 that did not appear connected to authorized investigations.
State police said Craig repeatedly accessed license plate recognition information while listing reasons such as traffic violations, drug offenses, assaults and vehicle thefts.
However, investigators reported finding no corresponding investigations that justified those searches.
Authorities also determined that the activity appeared to occur consistently during Craig's scheduled working hours.
Officer Faces Felony and Fraud Charges
After examining department records, time logs and Flock system access history, investigators concluded that Craig allegedly accessed information contrary to department policy and without a lawful purpose.
Detective Boley subsequently obtained an arrest warrant through the Floyd County courts.
On Thursday, October 22, Indiana State Police SWAT personnel assisted in serving the warrant at Craig's Greenville home.
Craig was arrested without incident.
He faces three criminal charges: one Level 6 felony count of official misconduct and two Class A misdemeanor counts of fraud.
The investigation remains active, and Indiana State Police said no additional information would be released at this time.
Authorities have not publicly detailed whose license plate information was allegedly accessed or whether any individuals were specifically targeted.
Craig is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
