Gary, IN – A 38 year old man has been sentenced to three years in federal prison after a traffic stop in Gary uncovered a loaded handgun and additional ammunition, bringing a federal firearms case that began more than two years ago to sentencing.
According to the Gary Police Department , Kenneth James Talbert was sentenced Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, to 36 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The case originated from a July 2024 traffic stop conducted by Gary police officers, who discovered a loaded Glock 19 9mm pistol equipped with an extended magazine inside Talbert's vehicle.
Officers also located an additional magazine during the stop, according to the department.
Authorities said Talbert was legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition because of his prior felony convictions.
The discovery ultimately led to federal prosecution and Talbert's guilty plea.
Federal Investigation Leads to Prison Sentence
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case with assistance from the Gary Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Toth prosecuted the case.
The sentence includes three years of federal incarceration and an additional two years of supervised release after Talbert completes his prison term.
Supervised release allows federal authorities to monitor individuals after incarceration and requires compliance with court ordered conditions.
The Gary Police Department also identified Talbert as incarcerated at the Lake County Jail in its public announcement.
Officials did not provide additional details about the circumstances leading to the original traffic stop or specify the nature of Talbert's previous felony convictions.
The case highlights the federal penalties that can result when individuals with felony convictions unlawfully possess firearms.
