Gary, IN – Three teenage boys suspected in an armed carjacking in Illinois were arrested Sunday after an alleged high speed pursuit through Lake County, Indiana, that topped 120 mph and ended after the teens fled into a Gary home.
According to the Lake County Sheriff 's Department, officers learned shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday that Chicago police were searching for a stolen black Chevrolet Suburban whose owner was tracking it using GPS.
A Lake County officer located the SUV near 50th Avenue and Massachusetts Street in Gary. When the officer activated emergency lights and a siren, the driver allegedly fled north on Broadway before entering westbound Interstate 80.
Authorities said the SUV was driven recklessly at speeds exceeding 120 mph. The driver exited I 80 at Burr Street and continued through Gary.
In the 4900 block of West Seventh Avenue, three occupants allegedly jumped from the SUV while it was still moving and entered a home.
Police surrounded the residence. Two boys later came onto the porch and were taken into custody, while officers located a third boy inside, according to the sheriff's department.
Authorities also learned the fleeing SUV had allegedly struck another vehicle near Seventh Avenue and Clark Road. The person in that vehicle was transported to a hospital with injuries believed to be non life threatening.
The three suspects, ages 15, 16 and 17, were transported to the Lake County Juvenile Center.
Authorities have not released additional information about the alleged Illinois carjacking or announced specific charges against the teens. The allegations have not been proven in court.
