Gary, IN – The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred in Gary on Monday, September 14, 2026. The decedent has been identified as 20 year old Demarea Williams of Gary.
According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, officials were dispatched to Methodist Northlake hospital at 600 Grant St. at 4:47 p.m. on September 14 following notification of the incident. Williams was pronounced dead by an emergency room physician at 4:40 p.m. that same day.
Investigators determined that the incident occurred at the intersection of 24th Avenue and Connecticut Street in Gary. A forensic autopsy was subsequently conducted on Tuesday, September 15, at the Lake County Forensic Science Center located at 2900 W.
93rd Ave. in Crown Point. The autopsy confirmed that the preliminary cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the manner of death has been officially ruled a homicide.
Multiple agencies are currently involved in the ongoing investigation, including the Gary Police Department , the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, and the Lake County Crime Lab. Authorities have not yet released details regarding potential suspects or a motive for the shooting.
