NORTHERN INDIANA — A significant autumn weather change is heading toward northern Indiana, bringing widespread rain, isolated thunderstorms, gusty winds and a sharp temperature drop before the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, conditions will remain dry Wednesday night, Oct. 14, before showers and isolated thunderstorms begin spreading across the region Thursday, Oct. 15.
Rain chances will increase throughout Thursday, starting at 30% to 50% during the late morning hours before climbing to 60% to 80% by the afternoon.
Forecasters expect showers to continue Thursday night as the storm system moves through the Great Lakes region.
Thursday afternoon temperatures are expected to reach between 61 and 70 degrees , providing relatively mild conditions before colder air arrives.
By Friday, Oct. 16, the weather pattern will change noticeably as northwest winds strengthen and temperatures begin falling.
The National Weather Service forecasts wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph Friday, with potentially stronger gusts near Lake Michigan.
Rain chances Friday morning will range from 40% to 60%, transitioning to lake effect rain showers by the afternoon, when precipitation chances could reach 40% to 80%.
Friday's high temperatures are expected to remain between 57 and 60 degrees.
The biggest temperature change arrives Friday night , when overnight lows are forecast to fall between 34 and 39 degrees across northern Indiana.
Although temperatures will approach freezing in some areas, forecasters say breezy conditions and cloud cover could limit frost development.
Drivers should prepare for wet roads, reduced visibility during heavier showers and gusty crosswinds, particularly on exposed highways and near Lake Michigan.
Residents should also secure lightweight outdoor items ahead of Friday's stronger winds.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to monitor updated forecasts as the storm system approaches.
