Fort Wayne, IN – Drivers across northern Indiana face potentially hazardous travel conditions Wednesday morning, October 21, as a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EDT. Visibility could drop to one quarter mile or less in affected areas, creating dangerous conditions for commuters traveling through Fort Wayne, Allen County and surrounding communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the advisory was updated at 4:36 a.m. EDT Wednesday and covers portions of northern Indiana, southwest Michigan and northwest Ohio. Forecasters warn that dense fog could significantly reduce visibility, making it difficult for motorists to see vehicles, intersections and other roadway hazards.
The advisory includes Allen County and neighboring northeastern Indiana counties, including DeKalb, Noble, Whitley, Huntington, Wells and Adams.
Additional counties across the broader advisory area include portions of northwest Ohio and southwest Michigan.
Morning Fog Creates Immediate Travel Concerns The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down, use headlights and leave additional distance between vehicles when traveling through dense fog.
Drivers should avoid using high beam headlights because the light can reflect off fog droplets and further reduce visibility.
At Fort Wayne International Airport, temperatures were reported at 39 degrees shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday, with humidity at 100%.
Although the airport observation reported 10 miles of visibility at that time, the advisory indicates that dense fog could affect other locations across the region.
Fog is expected to gradually improve during the morning, allowing sunshine to develop later Wednesday.
Five Day Fort Wayne Weather Outlook Wednesday 10/21: Areas of dense fog are expected before noon, with mostly cloudy skies gradually becoming sunny. Afternoon temperatures will reach approximately 68 degrees. Winds will remain calm. Wednesday night will be mostly clear, with patchy fog developing after 4 a.m. and temperatures falling to around 43 degrees.
Thursday 10/22: Patchy fog could return before 10 a.m., potentially affecting another morning commute. Sunshine is expected afterward, with temperatures reaching approximately 69 degrees. Calm winds will continue. Thursday night will be mostly clear, with overnight temperatures dropping to around 43 degrees.
Friday 10/23: Sunny skies are forecast, with temperatures reaching approximately 66 degrees. Calm winds will become easterly around 5 mph during the morning. Friday night will remain mostly clear, with temperatures falling to approximately 42 degrees.
Saturday 10/24: Sunshine continues across Fort Wayne and surrounding communities, with afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 68 degrees. Saturday night will be mostly clear, with temperatures falling to around 45 degrees.
Sunday 10/25: Mostly sunny skies are expected, with temperatures climbing to approximately 73 degrees. Sunday night will become partly cloudy, with overnight lows near 48 degrees.
Looking Ahead: Mild Weekend Before Cooler Weather The warmer Sunday forecast follows several days of relatively steady afternoon temperatures in the upper 60s.
Monday, October 26, is expected to remain mostly sunny, with highs near 68 degrees.
By Tuesday, October 27, temperatures are forecast to fall to approximately 61 degrees, with partly sunny skies and a slight chance of showers.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlook for October 28 through November 3 favors above normal temperatures across northern Indiana, while precipitation probabilities are generally near normal.
For now, Wednesday morning's dense fog remains the most immediate concern. Drivers should monitor updated National Weather Service information and allow extra time for travel where visibility is reduced.
