DeMotte, IN – Drivers traveling through northwest Indiana should prepare for a significant road closure beginning next week, as a section of U.S. 231 in Jasper County is scheduled to shut down for several weeks while crews complete a structure replacement project.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation's Northwest District, U.S. 231 will close between its junction with State Road 10 and County Road 1100 North on or after Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The closure is expected to remain in effect through mid November, although the exact reopening date has not been announced.
INDOT said the closure is necessary to complete a small structure replacement along the highway.
During construction, motorists will be directed to follow an official detour using U.S. 231/State Road 10, State Road 10 and State Road 110.
The detour will route traffic around the affected section of U.S. 231 near DeMotte, requiring drivers to adjust their usual travel routes.
The closure could affect local residents, commuters and commercial vehicles traveling through Jasper County and surrounding northwest Indiana communities.
Motorists who regularly use U.S. 231 are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow additional travel time once construction begins.
Drivers should also watch for posted detour signs and changing traffic conditions near the construction zone.
The project is scheduled to begin on or after October 14, meaning the exact closure date could shift depending on construction scheduling.
INDOT has not provided a specific reopening day beyond its mid November estimate.
Residents and travelers should monitor official INDOT updates for additional information as the project progresses.
