CROWN POINT, IN — Drivers traveling through northwest Indiana's Lake County should prepare for a major traffic disruption beginning Monday, Nov. 2, as a section of U.S. 231 near St. John and Crown Point is scheduled to close for approximately two weeks, forcing motorists onto alternate routes.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation's Northwest District, utility company NIPSCO will close U.S. 231 at Parrish Avenue, between U.S. 41 and Cline Avenue, beginning on or after Monday.
The closure will completely shut down the intersection, preventing motorists from traveling through the affected section of U.S. 231 or accessing the highway directly from Parrish Avenue.
Drivers should expect detours and allow additional travel time when commuting through the St. John and Crown Point area.
INDOT announced that the official U.S. 231 detour will follow U.S. 41, U.S. 30 and State Road 55, routing motorists around the construction zone.
For drivers using Parrish Avenue, the local detour will follow 101st Avenue, Cline Avenue and 117th Avenue.
The closure is necessary to accommodate utility relocations ahead of a planned roundabout project at the U.S. 231 and Parrish Avenue intersection.
Transportation officials said roundabout construction is expected to take place in 2027.
A public hearing regarding the project was previously held in 2024, allowing residents to learn about the proposed improvements.
The affected roadway serves motorists traveling between communities in southern Lake County and the broader northwest Indiana region, including those connecting to major routes toward the Chicago metropolitan area.
Because the closure is expected to last approximately two weeks, motorists should consider adjusting their regular commuting routes and checking traffic conditions before departing.
INDOT has not provided an exact reopening date, and the announced start date is subject to change.
Additional project information is available through the Indiana Department of Transportation at bit.ly/US231Parrish .
Drivers are encouraged to follow posted detour signs and remain alert for construction activity near the intersection.
