Cincinnati, OH – A widespread warmer than normal temperature pattern is favored across the Ohio Valley next week, with Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia all showing elevated probabilities of above normal temperatures. Rainfall expectations are less uniform, however, with drier than normal conditions favored farther east while portions of Indiana remain closer to normal precipitation levels.
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, the six to 10 day temperature and precipitation outlooks issued Wednesday, October 14, cover Tuesday, October 20, through Saturday, October 24. The maps show a broad area of above normal temperature probabilities extending from the central Midwest through the Ohio Valley, while precipitation probabilities change significantly across the region.
Ohio Valley temperatures show a strong warm signal Indiana stands within one of the stronger temperature probability areas in the eastern United States. Much of the state falls within NOAA's 60% to 70% probability category for above normal temperatures, with parts of western Indiana near an even stronger probability zone.
Ohio also shows a substantial warm signal, particularly across its western and central counties. Above normal temperature probabilities generally range from 50% to 70% across the state, weakening somewhat toward the eastern border.
Kentucky falls largely within the 60% to 70% probability category, with the warm signal extending across Louisville, Lexington and surrounding communities.
West Virginia also favors above normal temperatures, although probabilities are generally lower than those across Indiana and western Kentucky.
For Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus and Louisville, the outlook points toward a five day period more likely to average warmer than the historical late October normal.
The maps do not provide specific daily highs or indicate how many degrees above normal temperatures might climb.
Rainfall outlook divides the region The precipitation forecast reveals a different geographic pattern.
Indiana lies near the transition between above normal precipitation probabilities to the west and near normal conditions across much of the state. Western Indiana shows a modest wetter than normal tendency, while eastern sections are closer to equal chances.
Ohio presents a contrasting picture. Much of the state favors below normal precipitation, with probabilities generally in the 33% to 40% category, especially across central and eastern areas.
Kentucky also shows a geographic divide. Northern and eastern Kentucky favor below normal precipitation, while portions of western Kentucky fall closer to near normal conditions.
West Virginia lies more consistently within the below normal precipitation area, with a modest dry signal extending across much of the state.
What the outlook means for residents The combination of favored warmth and varying precipitation probabilities could influence outdoor recreation, fall events and travel planning during the October 20 24 period.
However, a warmer than normal five day outlook does not rule out chilly mornings, and below normal precipitation probabilities do not guarantee rain free weather.
The most important regional distinction is that Indiana has a stronger warm signal but a weaker dry signal than Ohio and West Virginia.
Residents should continue monitoring local forecasts as the outlook period approaches.
Will warmer late October weather extend your outdoor plans, or are you looking forward to cooler fall temperatures?
