Wheaton, IL – Residents in Wheaton and surrounding DuPage County communities have an opportunity to clear out unwanted holiday lights this season as the city launches its annual Holiday Light Recycling Program, with collections continuing through February 2027.
According to the City of Wheaton Government, the recycling program is now available and will continue through Sunday, Feb. 28, 2027, allowing residents to dispose of old or broken holiday lighting without sending the materials to local landfills.
The program accepts traditional holiday string lights, LED lights, rope lights and extension cords.
Residents can bring eligible items to the city's Public Works Storage Yard, located at 820 W. Liberty Drive in Wheaton.
The collection site is available Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
City officials emphasized that there is no limit to the number of holiday lights residents can recycle, making the program useful for households replacing older decorations or cleaning out storage areas.
The initiative offers an environmentally responsible alternative to throwing unwanted lighting materials into household trash.
Holiday lights often contain recyclable components, including copper wiring and other materials that can be recovered through specialized recycling processes.
By collecting these items separately, the city aims to reduce unnecessary landfill waste during the holiday season.
Residents preparing for Christmas decorating can use the program to dispose of damaged strands, outdated lights or unused extension cords before installing new decorations.
The collection period also extends well beyond the holidays, giving households additional time to recycle lights removed after Christmas and New Year's celebrations.
Wheaton officials encourage residents to review accepted materials and drop off guidelines before visiting the collection site.
Additional information is available through the city's official website.
