Waukegan, IL – A 29 year old Zion man was killed in a shooting Monday night in Waukegan, leading to an approximately hourlong police pursuit that ended with four juveniles apprehended, authorities announced Tuesday.
According to the Waukegan Police Department , emergency dispatchers received a report of gunfire in the 700 block of Lincoln Street at approximately 7 p.m. Monday. Witnesses reported a white four door Nissan leaving the area after the shooting.
Officers found multiple spent shell casings of different calibers at the scene. Police said the victim arrived at Vista Medical Center East in critical condition with several gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead.
Responding officers spotted the Nissan and attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle allegedly fled, prompting a pursuit. Police said several suspects exited the vehicle at different locations as the pursuit continued for approximately an hour.
Waukegan officers were assisted by North Chicago police, the Lake County Sheriff 's Office and Illinois State Police. State troopers ultimately helped bring the pursuit to an end in Waukegan, authorities said.
Investigators said crime related evidence was recovered from multiple locations in Waukegan, including two firearms. Four juvenile suspects from the Nissan were apprehended.
Police said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and authorities believe there is no ongoing risk to the public.
The Waukegan Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division is handling the homicide investigation. Authorities had not announced charges against the juveniles as of Tuesday's release, and the investigation remains open.
