WAUKEGAN, IL – A 33 year old man was critically injured after being shot in the chest near a Waukegan park Wednesday night, prompting an investigation that led to the arrest of a 50 year old suspect the following evening.
According to the Waukegan Police Department , officers responded to the 1500 block of Grand Avenue near Yeoman Park at approximately 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, after receiving a report of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they discovered a conscious and responsive 33 year old Waukegan resident suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.
Investigators said the victim was standing outside when a man he knew allegedly approached him on a bicycle.
The suspect allegedly got off the bicycle, walked toward the victim, pulled out a handgun and shot him before returning to the bicycle and fleeing the area.
Officers immediately provided medical assistance until Waukegan Fire and Rescue personnel arrived.
The victim was transported in critical condition to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
Police identified the suspect as Darnell Brown, 50, of Waukegan.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, investigators with the Waukegan Criminal Investigations Division obtained an arrest warrant for Brown.
Authorities located Brown shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday in the 600 block of Helmholz Avenue in Waukegan, where he was arrested without incident.
Police said Brown was held for his first court appearance. The department's Friday, Oct. 9, media release did not specify the criminal charges or provide an updated condition for the victim.
The shooting occurred in Waukegan, a Lake County community north of Chicago.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a possible motive in the release.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
