TINLEY PARK, IL — Amazon drone deliveries are launching in Chicago's south suburbs Friday, Nov. 6, bringing a new way to receive small packages and potentially introducing more aircraft activity above neighborhoods near the company's Matteson facility.
According to the Village of Tinley Park, Amazon Prime Air is beginning drone delivery operations from its facility at 7001 Vollmer Road in Matteson , using the company's MK30 delivery aircraft.
The drones can carry packages weighing up to five pounds and operate within an approximately 7.5 mile delivery radius of the Matteson location.
Amazon Drones Coming to South Suburban Skies The MK30 drones weigh approximately 83 pounds and measure 5 feet, 6 inches by 4 feet, 11 inches.
Village officials said the aircraft generally operate at or below 400 feet above ground level, subject to Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
The launch could bring noticeable drone activity to neighborhoods around Matteson and nearby communities, including portions of the Tinley Park area.
Actual delivery availability depends on Amazon's service coverage and customer eligibility.
Village Addresses Safety and Privacy Concerns Tinley Park Village Manager Patrick Carr acknowledged the changing technology and emphasized the importance of keeping residents informed.
"Technology continues to change how businesses operate, and drone delivery is another example," Carr said.
"With this level of activity expected in our area, we want residents to be informed and understand what they may begin seeing overhead. Public safety and communication remain our priorities."
