Springfield, IL – As Illinois heads toward colder weather and residents prepare to spend more time indoors and online, Illinois State Police are reminding the public that artificial intelligence can make fraudulent messages, photographs and even familiar voices appear convincing.
According to a public safety message shared Monday by Illinois State Police, advances in AI technology have made it easier to produce realistic digital content that may mislead people into trusting information without verifying its source.
The warning comes as the state approaches the winter months, when shorter days, colder temperatures and increased indoor activities can mean more time spent browsing social media, shopping online and communicating digitally.
Police emphasized that professional looking messages, familiar names, photographs and recognizable voices should not automatically be considered trustworthy.
AI generated material can imitate legitimate organizations or people someone knows, potentially making suspicious requests harder to recognize.
This is particularly relevant as the holiday shopping season approaches, bringing more online purchases, electronic payments and digital communications.
However, the department's announcement did not identify a specific new scam operation or report an increase in AI related fraud tied to winter.
Instead, the message focused on prevention.
Before sending money, sharing personal information or responding to unexpected requests, Illinois State Police recommend three steps: Stop. Think. Verify.
Residents should confirm suspicious information through trusted sources rather than relying solely on the message, phone call or image they receive.
Police also recommend establishing a family code word that can help verify someone's identity when an unusual or urgent request comes through.
As winter approaches and online activity becomes part of more daily routines, authorities are encouraging Illinois residents to remain cautious.
The central reminder from Illinois State Police is simple: Just because something looks or sounds real does not mean it is.
