Springfield, IL – Illinois residents are increasingly getting driver and vehicle services outside traditional DMV offices as the state's Mobile DMV program surpasses 60,000 transactions.
According to Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, the office has held more than 1,700 Mobile DMV events statewide since January 2023, completing more than 62,000 transactions in communities across Illinois.
The mobile operations have issued more than 50,000 REAL IDs, driver's licenses and state identification cards. They have also completed about 2,600 road tests and processed more than 8,500 vehicle registration sticker transactions.
"Since taking office, we have worked to make the DMV more convenient and accessible for Illinois residents," Giannoulias said. "Mobile DMV events allow us to bring essential services directly to communities, saving residents time and making it easier to take care of their DMV needs."
Some events use the Secretary of State's self contained DMV on Wheels units, which are equipped with onboard internet and can be set up at designated locations. Other pop up events are held inside community facilities without a mobile vehicle.
The Secretary of State's office works with municipalities, businesses, universities, organizations and other community partners to host events. Officials said the mobile program can also be used to quickly establish temporary service locations when regular operations are disrupted.
The expansion gives residents another option for completing common DMV tasks without traveling to a permanent facility, particularly in areas where access may be limited or demand is high.
