Springfield, IL – Rain will continue across central Illinois tonight before ending Friday morning, followed by a dry weekend with seasonable temperatures and plenty of sunshine.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a cold front moving across Illinois will keep rain in the forecast through tonight. Rain will linger longest across southeastern Illinois, where showers could continue Friday morning.
Most of central Illinois is forecast to receive between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain through Friday. Lower totals of 0.5 to 1 inch are forecast across portions of eastern and southeastern Illinois.
Localized heavier bands could produce isolated rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, the NWS said. The forecast graphic highlights parts of western Illinois near Quincy as one area where totals could approach 1.5 to 2 inches.
Rain chances are around 90% tonight, with temperatures ranging from 50 to 65 degrees across the forecast area.
Conditions improve Friday as the front moves away. Morning showers will remain possible mainly south of Interstate 70, but skies should begin clearing elsewhere. Highs are forecast from 65 to 70 degrees, followed by Friday night lows of 45 to 50.
Saturday will be sunny and dry, with highs ranging from 68 to 72 degrees. Another cool night follows, with lows again around 45 to 50.
Temperatures climb slightly Sunday under sunny skies, reaching 70 to 75 degrees.
The NWS expects the dry pattern to persist into early next week. Residents should expect rain through tonight and lingering showers in southeastern Illinois Friday morning before a longer stretch of seasonable, dry fall weather takes over.
