Springfield, IL – A significant late October warmup is heading toward central Illinois, with temperatures expected to climb into the upper 70s and potentially lower 80s by Thursday, Oct. 22. The unusually mild conditions will follow a sunny Sunday, with dry weather expected to continue throughout the workweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, temperatures will begin near seasonal averages Sunday, Oct. 18, before climbing approximately 10 to 15 degrees above normal during the remainder of the week.
High pressure will support an extended stretch of sunshine across central Illinois, including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign and Decatur.
How warm will Illinois get this week?
Sunday afternoon highs are forecast between 65 and 67 degrees, providing a relatively comfortable start to the week.
By Monday, Oct. 19, temperatures should climb into the upper 60s and lower 70s, with highs ranging from 67 to 72 degrees.
Tuesday brings another increase, with temperatures reaching 71 to 73 degrees.
The warmup continues Wednesday, Oct. 21, when highs could range from 72 to 77 degrees.
By Thursday, Oct. 22, afternoon temperatures are forecast between 76 and 81 degrees, potentially bringing an unusually warm October afternoon to portions of the region.
Will rain interrupt the warmup?
The National Weather Service expects sunny and dry weather to persist through the workweek, with no significant rainfall indicated in the supplied forecast.
Overnight temperatures will gradually moderate, climbing from the upper 30s early in the week into the 40s and lower 50s by Thursday morning.
The prolonged dry stretch could provide favorable conditions for outdoor activities, fall festivals and agricultural fieldwork.
Looking ahead: NOAA's Oct. 25 31 outlook continues to favor above normal temperatures across Illinois, suggesting the broader warm pattern could extend toward Halloween.
However, the longer range precipitation outlook remains less certain, and specific Halloween weather conditions are not yet established.
For now, central Illinois residents can expect five consecutive days of sunshine and a steady climb toward near 80 degree temperatures Thursday.
