Springfield, IL – Strong winds are expected to develop across central Illinois on Tuesday, November 3, with gusts approaching 40 mph in numerous communities, potentially creating difficult driving conditions for trucks, recreational vehicles and other high profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, south to southeast winds will strengthen throughout Tuesday morning before reaching their peak from midmorning through the afternoon.
The strongest gusts are expected primarily across areas north of Interstate 70, where many locations could experience peak wind speeds between 35 and 40 mph .
Communities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, Decatur, Lincoln and Galesburg are among those forecast to experience gusts approaching 40 mph.
Other locations, including Kankakee, Pontiac, Danville, Quincy and Paris, are expected to see slightly lower gusts, generally ranging from 30 to 35 mph .
The forecast covers the period from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST Tuesday , with the strongest winds most likely during the middle portion of the day.
Motorists traveling along major highways, including Interstates 55, 57, 72 and 74, should remain alert for sudden crosswinds, especially when driving through open farmland and exposed stretches of roadway.
High profile vehicles may be particularly vulnerable to stronger gusts, requiring drivers to reduce speed and maintain additional control.
The National Weather Service also encourages residents to secure loose lightweight outdoor objects , including patio furniture, decorations and trash containers, before winds increase.
Wind gusts approaching 40 mph can move unsecured objects and make outdoor activities uncomfortable, particularly in open areas.
Communities farther south, including Litchfield, Edwardsville, Olney and Robinson, are forecast to experience gusts closer to 30 to 35 mph.
Although the forecast highlights widespread gusty conditions, the supplied advisory does not indicate that a formal wind warning has been issued.
Residents should continue monitoring updated weather information as Tuesday's approaching storm system may bring additional changes.
