Springfield, IL – Central Illinois residents face another cold night Saturday, October 17, as temperatures fall toward freezing and frost threatens sensitive vegetation. A frost advisory is in effect late Saturday night east of Interstate 55, before a significant warming trend pushes temperatures toward 80 degrees next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Saturday afternoon temperatures will reach only 58 to 60 degrees across Central Illinois. Clear skies and chilly conditions will follow overnight, with temperatures dropping between 32 and 40 degrees.
Communities east of I 55 face the greatest concern for frost development, particularly across portions of the Bloomington, Champaign and Decatur areas.
Residents with sensitive plants, gardens or outdoor vegetation should consider protective measures before temperatures fall overnight. Frost can damage tender plants even when air temperatures remain slightly above freezing.
Despite the cold start, the forecast offers a major turnaround beginning Sunday.
Temperatures Climb Nearly 20 Degrees Next Week
Sunday will bring sunshine and afternoon highs between 64 and 66 degrees, with overnight temperatures ranging from 35 to 41 degrees.
By Monday, temperatures should climb into the lower 70s, reaching 70 to 72 degrees across the region.
Tuesday will continue the warming trend, with highs between 73 and 75 degrees.
Wednesday could feel considerably warmer, with afternoon temperatures reaching 74 to 79 degrees and overnight lows between 45 and 52 degrees.
The Weather Service expects dry conditions throughout the weekend and into next week, providing favorable weather for outdoor activities, agricultural operations and travel.
October 22–26 Extended Weather Outlook
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center favors above normal temperatures across Illinois during October 22–26, supporting the warming trend expected by midweek.
The precipitation outlook also favors below normal rainfall across much of Illinois, suggesting the relatively dry pattern could continue into the following weekend.
Although the outlook does not guarantee completely dry weather, it indicates a greater likelihood of warmer than normal conditions.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts for any changes to Saturday night's frost advisory and next week's temperatures.
