South Holland, IL – A Chicago Heights man has been arrested and charged after an I 94 crash was followed by gunfire that struck multiple vehicles in South Holland, according to Illinois State Police.
According to Illinois State Police, Troop 3 officers responded Sept. 17 to a traffic crash and reported shooting on southbound Interstate 94 at 159th Street in South Holland, Cook County.
Police allege a vehicle involved in the crash failed to stop and continued southbound. Investigators allege the driver, identified as 53 year old Forrest McHerron of Chicago Heights, fired a gun from his vehicle as he continued driving.
Multiple vehicles were struck by gunfire, ISP said. Police said one person returned fire and struck McHerron. That individual was not injured and was not charged, according to the agency.
McHerron allegedly continued into Indiana before Hammond police stopped him. He was taken to an area hospital for his injuries and remained in Illinois State Police custody, authorities said.
On Sept. 19, ISP presented the case to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. Prosecutors approved two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, both Class 1 felonies, and one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm, a Class 3 felony, according to state police.
McHerron later appeared for a pretrial detention hearing and was denied release, ISP said.
Authorities did not provide additional information about the initial crash or identify the other people involved.
The charges are allegations. McHerron is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
