Rockford, IL – Rockford Fire Department Headquarters will close to the public beginning Monday, Sept. 14, as a renovation project gets underway, with the closure expected to last through the end of 2026.
According to the Rockford Fire Department, the headquarters building will not be open to visitors while renovation work is underway. Officials anticipate restoring public access in January.
The temporary closure affects in person access to the department& 39;s headquarters, but it will not cut off residents from fire department services by phone.
Department phone lines will remain operational and staffed throughout the renovation project, officials said. Residents who need to contact the Rockford Fire Department can call 779 348 7171.
The department is also directing residents who need to submit Freedom of Information Act requests to use the City of Rockford& 39;s online FOIA portal while the building is unavailable to the public.
The closure is expected to span more than three months, covering the remainder of September and continuing through October, November and December. Officials did not announce an exact reopening date beyond saying public access is anticipated to resume in January.
The department also did not provide details in Wednesday& 39;s announcement about the specific renovations planned at the headquarters or whether the construction will affect other fire department operations.
For Rockford residents in Winnebago County and the surrounding northern Illinois area, the primary immediate change will be the loss of in person access to headquarters beginning Monday. Emergency fire and rescue services were not identified as being affected by the project.
The department thanked the community for its patience while the improvements are completed.
